Sarah Roux, President says…

The committee have been very busy since last summer!

The new website is complete and looks superb.  Many thanks go to our web designers and the website co-ordinator for all the hard work which went into making it such a success.  I’m sure you agree, www.isdh.ie has had a real facelift and is marvellous.

The winter lecture was held in the Dublin Dental University Hospital on the 17th November.  It was given by Dr. Caoimhin MacGiolla Phadraig and was entitled ‘What’s So Special About Care for Patients With Learning Disability?’  Caoimhin gave a very thought provoking lecture, which was well received by all who attended.  Many thanks go to Caoimhin.  The lecture is available for download from the website.

The Committee have recently become concerned on hearing reports of yet more cutbacks to HSE dental services for those patients who require special care, especially in the curtailment of general anaesthetic services throughout the Republic of Ireland.  A questionnaire is currently under way to attempt to capture this situation nationally.

In other news we are very excited to announce that in collaboration with Dublin Dental Hospital we are in the process of hosting a 2-day seminar in ‘Motivational Interview Techniques’.  Don and Jen Morrow are travelling from Canada to speak to us on this up and coming topic.  It is due to take place on the 21st and 22nd May 2012.  Final details are still to be confirmed, but it shall take place in the Dublin Dental Hospital and ISDH members shall be given a discounted rate.

On that note, don’t forget to renew your membership!  Our membership year runs from January-January, so make the most of your annual fee and renew now.  Early renewal also means you’ll receive copies of the IADH Journal.

Organisation of our annual summer conference is well under way.  The title is ‘Neurodegenerative Conditions: Working Together to Regenerate Oral Care’.  This day long seminar will take place on Friday 22nd June 2012 in the Convention Centre Dublin, Spencer Dock, Dublin 1.  We have confirmed a host of international speakers, from the UK and further afield, lecturing on Alzheimer’s/Dementia, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington’s Disease and the dental approach for caring for patients with these conditions.  Keep an eye on the website for further news on what should be a great day’s worth of lectures and CPD points!

Best wishes,

Sarah.
